“She’s so talented, she doesn’t need to be doing this.”
Promoting her new single, “Retro Romance,” Girls’ Generation‘s Hyoyeon uploaded a short video of herself dancing to the song. While meant to be “fun in the sun,” the video has since received some comments from locals who got a completely different vibe from it.
In the video, Hyoyeon paired a skintight one-shoulder top with a miniskirt—showing off all her curves. Gorgeous, for sure, but some saw it as “skimpy” and “crazy short.”
Others pointed out that, especially with her outfit and dance moves combined, Los Angeles locals would easily mistake her for a prostitute.
Multiple comments mentioned “Figueroa Street,” a stretch of corridor notorious to Los Angeles locals for sex trafficking.
The cross streets where Hyoyeon was seen are Santa Monica Boulevard and Van Ness Avenue in the not-as-dangerous neighborhood of Hollywood.
While not exactly “hood” and definitely not “Figueroa Street,” locals still frowned upon the video and claimed, “She’s so talented, she doesn’t need to be doing this.”
The video in question is not the only one showing Hyoyeon dancing on the streets. Previous Instagram reels and even the “Retro Romance” music video show her dancing all around the city in the same or equally skintight outfits. But they did not trigger reactions as intense and negative as the latest one.
So, it seems the local significance of “standing on the corner of certain neighborhood streets, dressed in revealing clothing” (which one comment referred to as a “street ladies” vibe) that icked the stateside and/or Los Angeles locals.
