Netizens Disgusted Over Middle-Aged Men Fanboying Over NewJeans With SEVENTEEN’s Seungkwan

Netizens are disturbed after a new video was released featuring SEVENTEEN‘s Seungkwan.

SEVENTEEN’s Seungkwan

SEVENTEEN subunit BSS, consisting of Hoshi, DK, and Seungkwan, recently made their comeback with 1st Single Album SECOND WIND. Its title track is “Fighting,” featuring Lee Young Ji.

So, the members are actively promoting currently. Seungkwan guested on the Pixid YouTube channel. The concept was that he was an imposter in a group chat filled with “boomers” (middle-aged men) while he is part of the MZ Generation. Yet, his friends teasingly refer to him as a “boomer,” so he was confident he could blend in.

CARATs (SEVENTEEN fans) were initially excited as the scenario sounded hilarious. Yet, it took an unexpected and uncomfortable turn as NewJeans quickly became a topic of conversation.

The men were talking about using a “boomer”-like expression when suddenly one referred to a meme from a NewJeans video.

So, another man asked him if he was a Bunnies, the fandom name of NewJeans.

Seungkwan couldn’t hide his surprise to see the middle-aged men talking about NewJeans. NewJeans are technically labelmates of SEVENTEEN as they are under ADOR and Pledis Entertainment, respectively, both of which are under HYBE.

The men soon bonded over their mutual love for the K-Pop girl group. One invited another to go drinking afterward.

And some even started talking about their biases…

Seungkwan tried to use the opportunity to his advantage. So, he pretended like he didn’t know NewJeans.

He furthered the conversation by asking what other groups the men liked to which they replied, IVE and LE SSERAFIM. On the other hand, Seungkwan claimed his daughter was a CARAT.

Of course, Seungkwan knows all the K-Pop groups. He had even seen the video from which the meme originated.

But it was surprising that the men were all fans of NewJeans. One even said, “K-Pop is divided into before and after NewJeans,” and another man sang “Hype Boy.”

Since NewJeans was first introduced, netizens expressed concerns over the ages of the idols as they all debuted as minors since the eldest members were only 18 and the maknae Hyein is still only 14 years old. Some K-Pop fans even believe there should be age restrictions.

So, the scene of the men “fanboying” over NewJeans made many netizens uncomfortable, considering the members’ ages.

CARATs were excited to watch the video until the men revealed they were Bunnies. Most everyone found it disturbing.

It seemed as if the interviewer perhaps asked the men about age because one man defended himself, saying, “Age doesn’t matter when it comes to talented idols.” In some ways, this is a true statement…

But is it really okay for adults to be part of a fandom for a group that consists of underage girls? Many K-Pop fans think it’s unethical. What do you think?
